Rodolfo Sánchez Sánchez. Glory of Cuban sport. Sportsman who was part of the National Volleyball Team where he had a meritorious performance. He represented Cuba in national and international events in which he won silver and bronze gold medals in several editions.

He was born on May 27, 1969 in Pinar del Río.

 

Studies

He began his first studies at the Isidro de Armas school in his hometown, where he was recruited by his biotype and physical abilities for the EIDE Ormani Arenado Llonch in the province where he studied up to 9th grade. From there he went to the National ESPA "Giraldo Córdova Cardín" in the municipality of Playa, in Havana, where he studied up to the 10th grade and finally finished High School at the EPEF Manuel Piti Fajardo in Mulgoba. Years later he graduated as a Licentiate in Physical Culture.

Sports Career

He started practicing sports when he was still a primary school student and he is approved to enroll in the School of Sports Initiation EIDE Ormani Arenado Llonch Pinar del Rio. Due to his results as an athlete, he passed to the National ESPA "Giraldo Córdova Cardín".

He participated in National School Games and National Youth Games, 1st Category National Competition and other national events.

Participation in international events

He was part of the National Youth Team and the Cuba Volleyball Team representing his country in numerous events such as:

- Juegos Juveniles de la Amistad, 1984.

- Pan American Games Havana 1991, Cuba. Gold Medal.

- XII Pan American Games Mar del Plata 1995, Argentina. Bronze Medal.

- XVIII Central American and Caribbean Games, 1998, Maracaibo, Venezuela. Gold Medal.

- XXV Olympic Games of Barcelona 1992. Spain. 4th place

- XXVI Olympic Games of Atlanta 1996. United States. 6th. place.

- World Volleyball League, Italy, 1998. Gold Medal.


Retirement from active sport

After his retirement from active sport in 2001, he worked for years with the lower categories, achieving remarkable success as a coach. In 2010 he was in charge of the team that participated in the 1st Youth Olympic Games. In July 2013, the Cuban Volleyball Federation appointed him as director of the Men's National Team at a time when this team had had a terrible result in the XXIV World League. The young squad under his tutelage has obtained important triumphs, winning in level, discipline and unity, and the right to participate in relevant events.

Results as Director

World League June 2014

- I Youth Olympic Games, based in Singapore, held in August 2010. First place. Gold Medal

- XXII NORCECA Men's Volleyball Championship, held in Langley, Canada, in September 2013. Bronze medal[1].

- Training stop in Mexico City in May 2014 [2].

- XXV World Volleyball League that took place in the city of Bursa, Turkey, in June 2014, where the Cuban national team took first place in Group III, securing 21st place and unofficially its presence in Level II in 2015 [3].

- IX Pan American Volleyball Cup (m) was held in August 2014 in the Mexican city of Tijuana, Baja California, where the Cuban team once again won first place and the gold medal. At the same time it had already secured one of NORCECA's five spots for the 2015 World League[4].

- XVIII Men's Volleyball World Championship Poland 2014. The Cuban team that was part of Group B that competed in the city of Katowice, was placed in the 4th place of that group, passing to the second one where it could not qualify for the third one, being placed in the eleventh place of the final table of positions.

- II Pan American Men's U-23 Volleyball Cup, held at the Sports City Coliseum in Havana in October of this year, where Cuba won first place after six consecutive victories[5].

- XXVI World Volleyball League, which began in May 2015, where the Cuban team lost its first two matches against the hosts in the Stampede Corral hall in the city of Calgary, in Canada[6]. On the 31st of the same month, the Caribbean team achieved its first victory in this league, defeating the Argentine team 3-2 in a match corresponding to Group C of the second level of the competition, which took place in the city of Mendoza, Argentina[7].

- The North, Central American and Caribbean Volleyball Champions Cup (NORCECA), held in the U.S. city of Detroit from May 21 to 23, 2015, where the Cuban team won third place[8].

- NORCECA's Men's Volleyball Pre-Olympic, based in Edmonton, Canada, concluded on Jan. 11, 2016, where the Cunbano team was undefeated in three games without losing a set and with a guaranteed ticket to this year's Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games[9].
