In the War of 95 he created a blood hospital in the Arroyo de Agua camp, Consolación del Sur. He cared for and defended the wounded with weapons and his hospital could never be located and taken by the Spaniards thanks to his tenacious resistance. For his bravery, Maceo conferred the rank of Captain.

Antonio was a brave guerrilla in the Sierra Maestra, better known as Pinares. When the Revolution triumphed, he received the degrees of Commander and completed important missions in the Revolutionary Armed Forces in Pinar del Río and Isla de Pinos. In 1966 he left for Bolivia with Che, becoming the legendary Marcos in the guerrillas.
